He is, but I'm certain that he'll be able to come out of his shell again, given a bit of time.
[It's almost 40 strangers but at least a lot of them are so warm and friendly, which helps a lot... Also Mathis is just out here saying things all the time he's so tired, but given there's no reason to lie, he just nods!! HE GUESSES.]
[ He perceives this to be a sensitive topic so he doesn't pry much unless Lucas seems open to it, but he'd rather err on safer than sorry. Because you know, what's he going to do about it. ]
[He says it with a very small smile, but one that seems genuinely appreciative. Truly what else can someone do in a situation like that outside of being like "WELL THAT SUCKS". It's about the commiseration...
But! His smile grows a little after that.]
I teach any subject that needs to be taught, up to certain levels of understanding. If you know a little about our nation, it probably won't surprise you to hear that we have many orphans... I travel through them and teach children from the earliest grades to their early teenage years.
[ Lucas, winning over toddlers. We take our victories around here. ]
I wouldn't undersell myself if I were you. I'm no good when it comes to physical exertion, for example. It's just as good to be versed in a little bit of everything.
Oh! [HIS EXPRESSION LIGHTS UP...] Marvelous! That's one thing I'm not very skilled at, beyond the basics. We have so many people here who are prone to getting into trouble that it's a relief to hear we have a doctor.
If we've this much free time on our hands, may as well use it for something productive...
Splinting broken bones is an easy enough thing to learn, fixes one of the more probable and common injuries in a fight, and helps regain a level of an edge back the quickest.
[Time to walk and grab some sticks from their hauntedass forest.]
Personally? I haven't, no. [Blessed...] Though I did have the misfortune of seeing someone else break a bone once... That's about as close as I've gotten. I learned basic splinting once quite a long time ago, but since I've never had to use it, I'd hardly count the knowledge.
[Now he's just thinking about snapped bones and how terrible they are, though.]

[He poked around in there and recalls seeing real beds which is already better than half of them. But! He nods at that!]
Our group has gotten along quite well, too. Fortunately it seems I ended up in the same place as Mathis, so I have nothing to complain about.
no subject
He does seem to trust you and hold you in high regard.
no subject
[So while Mathis trusts and holds him in high regard, Lucas is out here ready to hit anyone who so much as looks at him the wrong way with a brick.]
It's been a difficult adjustment for him, so I do hope that the two of you will be able to get along.

...
He told me he was surprised to see somebody my age.

[It's almost 40 strangers but at least a lot of them are so warm and friendly, which helps a lot... Also Mathis is just out here saying things all the time he's so tired, but given there's no reason to lie, he just nods!! HE GUESSES.]
Yes... Our home doesn't have any human your age.
no subject
[ Yeah he knows so much about your fucked up little island now. It's very concerning over there. ]
So I've heard. Seems like you're dealing with quite the problem.
no subject
[Sweet Mathis just needs people who won't scare him back into hiding... BUT YEAH they sure are huh hm it's fine.]
It's a problem we've been dealing with for some time.
no subject
[ He perceives this to be a sensitive topic so he doesn't pry much unless Lucas seems open to it, but he'd rather err on safer than sorry. Because you know, what's he going to do about it. ]
What do you teach?

[He has to know so much textbook shit.]

[ Lucas has got his GEs down to a T. ]
no subject
[It's because hardly anyone teaches to begin with so the few that do just have to Do It All.]
It keeps me very busy, to say the least!
no subject
You really just might be our best all-rounder.
no subject
[Even though he's European Short™ he still has longer legs than five year olds... TAKE THAT SMALL CHILDREN.]
Though, given the scope of what others here have experienced, I don't know how true that might be...
no subject
I wouldn't undersell myself if I were you. I'm no good when it comes to physical exertion, for example. It's just as good to be versed in a little bit of everything.
no subject
I suppose that's true enough. [And then, with a curious little look:] Where would you say your strengths lie?
no subject
Doctoring, to be clear. 'Course, I can't entirely enforce it, but I can't just leave people around to bleed out either.
no subject
[LITTLE DOES HE KNOW.]
no subject
[ Because from what he's heard, it's from really silly things, like panicking or leeches. ]
Even the basics help, but you're smart enough to know that.
no subject
[Though it is also largely silly things from what he's heard, he's also seen multiple people do some headass stuff already.]
But yes, I'll certainly be glad to do what I can in a pinch if needed. It's reassuring to know that won't be all we have.
no subject
I'm sure it's not impossible that you may have to deal with a broken bone one day on a chlidren's playground.
no subject
[The scrapes and bruises he has to tend to are already bad enough when kids get so weepy over the smallest of wounds!! His weak heart can't take it.]
Well, I'll never turn down the chance to learn a little more, in any case.
no subject

A wonderful way of looking at it. [And this is arguably better than the. Fucking. Flower weaving book club he's formed without books SOMEHOW.]
Would you happen to have the time to show me the ropes now, then?
no subject
[ At least this conversation has been perfectly pleasant and distracting. He looks out. ]
Should be easy enough to mimic a limb with a branch. Can use one of the scrap fabrics we have around.
[ He's resourceful. They can take a walk around while grabbing random stuff. ]
Have you ever experienced that level of injury?
no subject
